Photographing Families: Tips for Capturing Timeless Images is a book by expert portrait photographer Michele Celentano.
The book takes us through how to create perfect family images that will last a lifetime, starting from the very beginning.
The first chapter is very picture rich, and includes advice on what will work and what will not, for example how to work with young children to keep them engaged and alternatives to the usual formal portrait. It also includes information on cameras, lenses and equipment that you'll need.
Also covered are the elements of photography, such as framing and composure to make images pleasing to the eye. Michele is also keen for readers to be able to get their images right in camera, as it saves a lot of hassle later in Photoshop.
The book looks at finding the best in locations, and how to use reflectors and flash to make lighting in image perfect. The chapter on understanding clients is really useful, especially for working with children as Michele explains how different age groups should be treated to get the best out of them, and the developmental stages of a child's learning is also included to help photographers understand
how to best work with them.
Overall, this book is a very comprehensive title that will be useful to anyone starting out as a portrait photographer or has a strong interest in the subject. It also covers making a successful business out of your photography and selling your prints, as well as a small section on post producing your images.
