Photographing Shadow And Light is an insight into the dramatic lighting techniques of portrait photographer Joey Lawrence.
At just 23 years old, Joey is one of the best young talents out there today. He has photographed a lot of top names in the music business, ranging from rockers Panic! At The Disco to gangster rappers G Unit. In this book, he explains all about how he sets up the lighting in his shots for a whole range of different portfolios and projects.
Joey tells us how he first started experimenting with lighting by photographing his toy dinosaurs in various different setups. By sixteen, Joey was photographing some huge bands of the time and struggled to balance photography with his school work, such is his talent with lighting shots.
Throughout each series of his work, Joey explains how he set up the shots, along with some background on how the shots came to be. He also includes diagrams of how his shots are set up, which are extremely useful for gaining a grounding in where to place your lighting for different effects.
Split into his fine art, music, and commercial portraits, the book really shows of Joey's talent for dramatically lighting a picture. There are some truly excellent shots of some very well known faces, and the book is also a sort of walk through of his career. Joey chats to the reader as if they are interviewing him, making the book very involving and easy to read.
Highly recommended if you want to learn a thing or two about lighting, or if you just love looking at brilliantly thought out photography.
