Judge's Write Up

Daily Mirror Picture Editor, Ian Down and Staff Photographer, James Vellacott judged the competition. Here's what they thought:

"The standard of photography was outstanding. The images covered many aspects of photography from great timing, precision lighting and focusing through to clever ideas and effects.

This month the theme was 'Smile' and all the images had an uplifting or comedy feel to them. We studied them on the monitors at the Mirror picture desk, which caused some interest from the editors and journalists who all had their ideas of who should win. Mirror Picture Editor, Ian Down who watches over 30000 images that arrive at the Daily Mirror every day, and myself decided that the winning image should be:

This candid image captures perfectly the smile and happiness of the young chap as he plays with the grown-up's foot. The image is pin sharp and nicely exposed in the slightly awkward side lighting. It's images like this that become timeless and go on to be a historical testament to the era in which it was taken. It's a spontaneous and perfectly captured image of a happy moment in time."
