Judge's Write Up

May's competition had a fantastic reponse and the theme Man and Nature certainly got your creative juices flowing. Damien Lovegrove sponsored the prizes and he also judged the very large shortlist. Congratulations to the winners and the shortlisted entries, now over to Damien.........

First Place

Holding Back the Sea by Thomas Graham.

This photograph, taken by Thomas Graham, shows excellent control in post production with the colours and tones beautifully rendered in the final image. However, it is the capture that makes it a winner. The choice of a just off vertical placement of the groins is inspired. The horizon position in the frame is spot on too. There was just the right mix of man and nature to make this picture a worthy winner among a strong field.

Thomas wins either a day of Shooting Urban Landscapes with Damien (worth £395 ) or a Masterclass of his choice with Marko (worth £240).

Second Place

Silky Balloons by Kristijonas Tumas.

Another shore line image caught my eye and secured second place. The balance of foreground, principal subject and background is just right. The main ingredient in this image that excites me is the low key yet luminous quality of the balloons and sand. The long exposure technique also worked well and makes this another picture I'd like on my wall.

Kristijonas wins a set of Using Flash and Using Natural Light on Location DVDs worth £140.

Third Place

Evening Lights by Nick Hilton.

I don't know what it is about this picture that triggers my interest. The fence line could be better placed slightly higher in the frame, the lamp head position could be lower, and the sky is not amazing. However the picture is fantastic. It just works - well seen and well done.

Nick wins a copy of Using Flash on location DVD with Damien Lovegrove worth £70.

Worth a mention

Dreaming by Matthew Hannan

This picture is minimalist to the extreme and is quite cheeky as a result. I just wish a small pea sized stone had been cast into the water beyond the decking. Then an element of timing would have come into play. The picture would have had to be taken at the exact moment the outer ripple lined up with the tip of the decking - just a thought.
