The unique '24 Hours in Bristol 2014' photographic competition is open to anyone with a smart phone or camera to record a day in the life of Bristol over a single 24 hour period. Hundreds of amateur and professional photographers from across Britain and beyond are expected to descend on the city over the August Bank Holiday, resulting in tens of thousands of images of Bristol at work, rest and play.
"We are asking people with cameras and mobile phones from across the West Country and beyond to photograph 24 hours in the life in Bristol ", said Mike Porter of Art Ventures Ltd. "Last year's event was an enormous success, with over 10,000 photographs taken on a single day and nearly 1,000 images were entered into the competition, resulting in a fantastic portrait of Bristol at work, rest and play."
"Both amateur and professional photographers are invited to capture the essence of life in this vibrant West Country city." said Mike. "Everyone entering will be allocated one of the 24 one-hour time slots and asked to take at least one photograph in that hour. The judges, which include the Director General of the Royal Photographic Society and the Group Picture Editor of the Bristol Post, will choose three winners from each of the 24 hours. The final 72 images will be printed, framed and exhibited at the Bristol's new Harbourside Arts Centre, off Millennium Square, in October".
This year's event is taking place over the August bank holiday, from noon Saturday 23rd August to noon Sunday 24th August, and will involve up to 1,000 people with cameras and smart phones scouring the city to record those special places and moments that define Bristol. From Brunels buildings and ships to Banksy's street art, Bristol has some of Britain's most recognisable landmarks as well as plenty of hidden gems. Its bustling harbourside, medieval old city, 12th century cathedral, world class festivals and events, combined with its shops, markets, foodie culture and fantastic variety of people and cultures make Bristol a photographer's dream, offering creative opportunities 24 hours a day.
As well as prizes for the best photographs taken in each hour, there will also be an overall first prize worth £3,000, including an Olympus PEN E-P5 camera and £600 Adobe editing package, a second prize of £1,000 sponsored by Spire Hospitals and a third prize of £500 sponsored by City Sightseeing Bristol.
The '24 Hours in Bristol' competition is organized by Art Ventures in association with Bristol City Council, Canada Life Investments and The Osborne Group.
