With the superb macro facilities on compacts these days it's easy to poke your lens into a unseen world, and even easier for those who have the cash to invest in some serious close up kit. But it's not easy to ensure all the elements of a good photo come together. The skill of a macro photographer is not just getting close it's making sure the right parts of the subject are in the frame, while ensuring what needs to be in focus is and the exposure is fast enough to prevent subject movement or camera shake.

In this competition we received over 1000 entries - one of the highest for some time...and the level was excellent. The shortlist is chosen with all the above criteria in mind...and we hope you agree that the winners picked from the shortlist are fine examples of macro photography.

The detail in the winning photo of a hoverfly wrapped up in a web being dragged away by the spider is incredible. Gemma used an SLR with a 150mm macro lens attached to capture this and wins herself a Nikon Coolpix P500.

The next four winners each take home a Nikon Coolpix S9100

Tim's dragon fly with perfect reflection claims second place, A low down shot of moss with dew drops set against a bright natural background scoops Matt (mohikan22) third place – these things are just 5mm high so that's close!

We received many flower entries but this one by Patrik (blomman) caught the judges eyes for its subtle overexposure, shallow focus and reduced tonal range. The pastel colours and subject placement suit the subject perfectly and make it worthy of the wall.

Fifth place is taken by Henrique (Lusitano) for the interesting use of barnacles which create a micro landscape looking like a pair of volcanos.

Congratulations to the winners and shortlist, thank to all who entered and good luck with the next competition everyone.
