Juvenile green woodpecker taken at the Avon Heath Country Park, near Ringwood in Hampshire.

This shot highlights the amazing flexibility of the Sigma 70-300. I had been in dragonfly hunting mode with 1:1 filter attached. Whern passing trhough a small patch of pine trees I heard a rustling above and looked up to see this beauty above me. I wipped off the 1:1 filter in a flash, switched out of Macro mode and fired off about a dozen shots before it made its escape.

It wasn't an easy shot as the dappled light was giving bright spots on the woodpeckers face. I managed to time this shot as the branches swayed, casting a shadow over the face, balancing the lighting nicely!

Camera:Canon EOS 10D
Recording media:ISO 400
