I think this type of image is very difficult to do well Derek, a reductive composition where you distill the elements of a landscape to an image that retains the essence and story but carries an air of mystery is somewhat of a holy grail for many of us! ....So it's no surprise that you have achieved this so brilliantly! Smile
Obviously the steely tones all harmonise nicely and the proportions of the image are very satisfying, I like the central placement of the steps down too. By not showing us the beach you really promote mystery and leave us to fill in the gaps ourselves. Is it a crowded beach, is it empty? It's hard to know what the weather is like with a long exposure though the FG looks a bit wet. I think it also speaks about journeys, departures, setting off into the unknown etc.
That's the measure of when this type of imagery really succeeds. It keeps you looking at a few well chosen and arranged elements for a long time and makes you think in depth as well. You've mixed artistic beauty that's timeless and speaks to us all with the intellectual side of modernism in art. Brilliant!
PS sorry for rambling on so much! Grin

You may call it rambling Alan but I have never heard anyone, including myself, complain about too much comment when its positive and constructive. I am really pleased you picked up on the mystery element as this was important when I composed the shot. I took a few images looking down the steps into the water but I dont think they work as well. I wanted the viewers eye to be led up to and down the steps using the railings only without knowing how far they descend or what lies at the bottom.

I love this shot. The muted colours are beautiful and the steps disappearing into the ether add a real sense of narrative. Love it, excellent work. Pretty good image to end the year on!

Superb image Derek, Alan summed it up better than I ever could and I agree with all his words, I also like the three distinct horizontal sections and the gritty textures and tones of the foreground contrasting with the smoothness of the sea and sky, great photography! Wishing you a happy new year Wink

In the eyes of an Ass the image would across somewhat simplistic in both form and composition, however looking through my eyes I see brilliance.

I hope that you have a Happy New, and that you continued to upload many more great photographs

How can anyone follow Al's critique Tongue. The 4 minutes has worked its magic, Derek, the three segments have a lovely similarity in form broken by the hard lines of the railings.
As Alun says, beautifully conceived and executed.

All the best for 2013,

Dave

Once again a simple but very effective composition. The LE has given just the right amount of abstract feel. Just goes to show what you can get on a day like that with the right imagination and skill. Wink

Ps. I quite like the sign, as it breaks the symmetry somewhat. Hoarses for coarses I guess.

Stunning long exposure. Simple yet so, so effective. I had already thought to myself that to keep the symmetry I'd clone the sign and I see that others have argued for and against such an act!!!!
Either way, it doesn't detract from a powerful image.
