Objectively speaking it is a good photo albeit a bit pretentious. Let me elaborate on the above statement.
Let me first start with the positive part of my opinion.
The exposure is very good. Highlights are well controlled and blacks are exactly where they should be. Good range of tones.
Interesting composition. Tight framing suits the topic. After all boxing (fighting in general) is about violating personal space. Catchlights adds agression in the context of the picture.
Now, the negative part.
The photo is pretentious because it is so carefully posed and arranged that it defies authenticity. After all, it could be anybody in the picture not even remotely involved in boxing. We don't see any characteristic features of a real fighter such as broken nose, well developed chest muscles etc.
To sum up, the photo is technically well executed but it lacks impact due its lack of authenticity.
Let me add an example from the shortlisted photos that illustrates exactly what I wanted to convey in my criticism. Here is a photo that does not look phoney to me: bgaras2001.
I this photo we can see a real fighter or at least somebody who looks authentic.
digipix, please don't take it personally. I am not criticising you but one of your photos only![]()
Can I disagree with the above comments - it is a posed boxing picture, a very traditional image and composition that goes back to the 1930's on fly posters and bills, very well done, I love the use of the traditional imagery and it makes a great change from all the (leaden skies) over photoshopped rubbish on this website. So you have my vote.
