Test images
All the tests images are available to download - simply click on a picture to see the hi-res version, or right click and select Save Link As to directly save the hi-res version. We have introduced some standard test shots, and this is what we're looking for:



Colour chart - this is the GretagMacbeth ColorChecker chart and we use it to assess how well colours are rendered and particularly the combinations of colours. Note that all web browsers will render this image as sRGB, whereas the chart itself contains colours that are only reproduceable in AdobeRGB. To see this chart properly for cameras that shoot in AdobeRGB, right click and select the Save Link As option.



Portrait test - we're looking at how life-like and healthy the skins tones are reproduced, and how consistent the colour is.



Landscape test - sharpness, colour and how well the camera can cope with contrasting light. Also, noise in shadow areas is examined.



Noise tests - we shoot the same image of a red and yellow flower, sat over a grey card, at all the ISO settings available on the camera, under the same natural lighting conditions. What is displayed on the website is a close up crop of the central part of the image. You can download the full image to check noise levels for all the cameras we review.

Scores
Each camera is assessed for the Features it has - whether it has lots of them or one radical and cutting edge feature. The Handling is an assessment of how easy it is to use, both in terms of grip, buttons and controls and menu options. Performance covers how well, within it's own camera class, it works and implements the features it has. The Overall score is a final, overall assessment of quality of the camera, given its price point and features. It is not a aggregate of the other ratings. You can assess the scores like this:

1-3: Dire. Truly, if you were given a camera that had this kind of rating, you'd throw it away.
4: Poor. Either significantly over-priced, lacking in truly useful features, or has performance issues.
5: Below average: Has some merits, but also notable flaws that drag the score down. Could also be reasonable performer, but completely over-priced.
6: Average. Neither a bargain, nor has outstanding features or performance, or might be over-priced. Could be considered.
7: Good. Has some good features, is well priced, offers something worth having in its category.
8: Very good. Either has an outstanding feature but everything else is ordinary, or performs well across a range of features.
9: Excellent. Put this on your Christmas list, it has either great features, cutting edge technology, and is worth every penny.
10: Outstanding. A class-leading award winner, offering radical cutting edge technology and design, stunning performance and a must-have feature set, at value for money price point.

Awards
