Toshiba PDR-M70
A simple design following the shape of a basic compact, with centre placed LCD panel showing mode details set on the buttons below – it's all very familiar. It doesn't have the robust feel of, say, a Canon or Nikon, but the 3.3 million pixels, Canon lens and good user control makes it otherwise competitive among the conventional camera names.

Toshiba PDR-M5
The bulky cyber styling may put traditionalists off who will be joined by those who want a pocketable camera. The system produces images that are slightly cold, fortunately you'd only notice this if comparing one make with another so it shouldn't be a problem. The image compression system seems to produce images with harsh edges too and while sharp the pictures can look too digital.

Sony Mavica MVC-FD95
The beast of Bodmin. This camera has the backend of a Mavica and the front end of a camcorder. It's huge! Why? Because it houses a 10x zoom with a 20x digital extension. Sports and wildlife photographers will find this lens a benefit. Most of us would find the camera too big to take out. The resolution at 2.1million pixels is the highest yet in a Mavica design, but you don't get many pictures per floppy disk, so you'll either need to take a huge pile of disks or a computer to continually download images. not exactly portable!

Sony Mavica MVC-FD90
Another chunk Mavica made bigger because of the 8x optical lens that delivers a 41-320mm focal length range. Many are put off by the size and relatively low resolution, but if you shoot subjects at a long distance you're better off using a lower resolution camera with a powerful lens than trying to greatly crop a higher resolution picture.

Sony Mavica MVC CD1000
Sony are a great believer in simple storage and the Mavica takes the floppy disk format to new levels here with a model that records images onto CD. This means you get a massive storage capacity to hold hundreds of pictures that are on a format that's compatible with most computers. It makes the camera big but you also gain a 10x zoom with 20x digital option. The camera incorporates Optical Steady Shot to help keep the image stable and the resulting picture free from camera shake. If taking large numbers of pictures is important this offers a practical solution.

Sony Mavica MVC-FD73
Entry level Mavica, which by the side of a normal digital camera looks stupidly large. The reason for this is Mavica's store pictures on floppy disks. This not only makes them easier to access from your own PC but also easier to send to other users and for them to access. You can store up to 40 images on one disk, so it offers very low cost storage, but it's only 350,000 pixel resolution and is a hefty camera to carry around.
