Sony Cyber-shot DSC-S70
One of the more expensive three million pixel camera but mention Carl Zeiss lens to any photo enthusiast and he'll tell you it's worth the cash. Sony teamed up with Carl Zeiss to marry their electronics with the finest maker of lenses. These lenses, used on Hasselblad and Contax cameras, deliver stunning edge to edge resolution so results should be better than the competitors. Some magazine tests have suggested this not to be the case, but we can't fault the optical quality. It's main problem is the sluggish AF making it hard to take pictures quickly.

Sony Cyber-shot DSC-S50
This streamline version of the F505 has a more pocketable 3x zoom and Sony make not Carl Zeiss. Like all Cybershots, it takes MemoryStick, and has a 2.1 million pixel resolution. The display is bright, the functions easy to control and overall as good as the competition in this price point.

Sony Cyber-shot DSC-P1
Branded as the smallest digital camera with a 3x zoom and with an attractive ‘must-have' style. While the shape is very easy to get used to, you have to be careful to prevent your fingers straying over the lens. The 3x zoom and 3.3 million pixel resolution promise good image detail and the 90min battery should keep you going without that frustrating change battery symbol appearing every five minutes.

Sony Cyber-shot DCS-F505V
The 10x zoom lens is the dominant feature of this camera which appears to be hanging on the back of the lens! The design allows the body to swivel so you can shoot from the hip or above your head comfortably and the flash pops up giving distance from the lens and slightly better shadow control. The three million pixels and the Carl Zeiss lens ensure good quality images, but Olympus Camedia C-3030Z and Nikon Coolpix 990 appear to have the edge If this model sound like the one you want don't make the mistake of buying the "v" less DCS-F505 which has a lower spec two million pixel CCD.

Samsung SDC 80
With its distinctive fashion styling of rounded globular shape and blue plastic facia this model from the electronics giant stands way out from the crowd. It joins the current trend for cool looking objects kick started by Apple with their iMAC. It's another of those cameras that's better for Web work than real photography but you can't fault it for appeal.

Samsung DigiMax 35 MP3
A brightly styled camera that has an MP3 player built-in and comes with some great software for creating Web panoramas and spinning objects. Don't expect photo quality from the 350,000 pixel CCD but for on-screen use it's fine.

Ricoh RDC-i 700
Could easily be mistaken for something that James Bond would use. A digital camera with a modem ready connection so pictures can easily be downloaded. There's a virtual keyboard and a scribble pen for making notes and an e-mail address book. You can even upload files to a web site, browse the internet and send faxes. Oh and it also takes photos! (see similar, non-internet, RDC-7)

Ricoh RDC-5300
Metal casing, slim looks and great close focus make this a desirable model that will fit neatly into a pocket. It doesn't have the binocular shape that Ricoh have designed in other models so is more appealing for the traditionalist. The zoom lens captures really sharp images onto the 3 million pixel CCD so it can be used confidently for making enlargements.

Ricoh RDC-7
Ricoh continue to create cameras with a flat style that are held like binoculars. This style goes against everything other manufacturers produce so it gives Ricoh a unique look and one that is easy to get used to. The camera is a 3.3 million pixel model that can be enhanced to 7 million using a special pro mode. It offers the closest focusing of any digital camera and has a good range of manual override to offer creative control. Still, motion, sound and text recording makes it a versatile combination for the web creator or business user.

Ricoh RDC-6000
Simple looks and the fixed lens don't exactly fill you with excitement, but don't let that put you off. The two million pixel resolution and a cracking optical quality ensure sharp results and the amount of user control including aperture-priority and auto bracketing help you get the shots you want. Web users will also find the AVI movie and time lapse features useful. It can even be used as a WebCam.
