I found an interesting website through searching in Google whereby you can go into a file in the RawShooter program and change any reference of "350D" to "400D" and the program will function with that camera instead (but probably ignore any pictures taken with the 350D!) I found it!!! There's a nipple near the base of the flash that gets stuck. When it's stuck it doesn't know the flash popped up. Hence, take a fine pic to lift that nipple. Fixed!

This website has downloads of all the Canon software for the EOS 400D/XTi (scroll down to the bottom). If they're not the most up to date you should then be able to use the updates on the official Canon sites. HTH, Simon

I have the battery grip for mine, it is great because I can easily get two days of busy shooting without worrying about batteries. Also I have the holder for 6 AA batteries - an extra bonus. I tried the pencil eraser thing and the lens started to work well; though, when I change it and put it back again the problem continues as long as I turn my eos on, then it works as expected!!! Think I got it for a cleaning and general revision. But thank you again for caring and your fast answer!!! I got the battery issue in mind too...
