I have an EM complete with E series 28mm f2.8, 50mm f1.8 and 70 -150mm f/3.5 and winder, all in mint condition. Been in the cupboard for yonks but I am experimenting with using it for IR using the Rollei 400IR film and Ilford SFX gel filter. Reckon to use external meter and cable release on 'B' setting. (tripod of course). A pity it hasn't got independant shutter speed control. If I can't make ...

Don't discount your 18-70mm lens it's better than many of the replacements you're considering. I have the 16-85mm VR and I don't think it performs as well as the 18-70mm did.I have both the 18-70 and the 16-85, both great lens for DX cameras, but the 16-85 is a big leap forward in every way to the 18-70.

Got one when I first purchased my S2. Fairly happy with it but it needed to be used in a tripod, especially so when my arthritis problem. Best at f/8 to 16. Not too clever around the 250-300 mark, but otherwise it is well worth the money. If you can get one for good money then the 80-400 VR is a far better option.

I'm thinking of buyng a D7000 in April, and the 17-55 f2.8 looks interesting. The odd thing about this lens is the the 'professional' reviews on the internet can be quite critical of this lens' performance, while owners seem to love it. I'll put my faith in the views of owners. Ken

I use a mixture of Nikkor and Sigma lenses, for example: Nikkor 16-35mm f/4 Nikkor 24-70mm f/2.8 Nikkor 70-200mm f/2.8 Nikkor 105mm f/2.8 Sigma 8mm Sigma 150-500mm and, as a travel lens on my old D300, a Sigma 18-200mm I would say that, as far as sheer optical quality is concerned, none of those lenses are deficient in any way that can be detected in any of the uses I put them to ...

If you want the Macro feature the sigma may well be the best feature/cost lens, the Nikkor'G' does not focus close enough to give even close to a macro mode!. There is no compatability problem (that I have heard of) with 3rd party lenses so I would not worry about buying same brand as the camera, especially in the budget end of the market. If you get a chance to try them do so! Joe B

Zooms with moderate ranges like 17 - 35 / 17-55 / 28-70 70 - 200 etc are fine (my 17 - 55 is as good as the nikon 20, 28, and 50mm lenses it replaced) but just beware of the so called 'superzooms' - they are full of optical compromises and while the nikon one is apparently very decent it's probably not one of the better lenses nikon make.

If I may link to two lens reviews that I feel match my own experience of this and the Sigma 18-50 (P.S I thought distortion on the sigma was as bad but the test indicates the sigma is better). I was thinking of the stopped down to F8 comments. Nikon 18-200 Sigma 18-50 And just for fun the pair of Nikon's I would pick, though the 70-300 is the weaker of the lot I would still think on it as ...

The Sigma 12-24 is also for full-frame - not as sharp, nor as fast as the Nikkor 14-24 f2.8, but it is about half the price, though.

As it happened, a shop only 120 kms away had the Tamron on special offer. Now I thought instead of buying a lens on ebay all I need is a good pretext to put it through the books. and I'm writing a thing about EGRs . my accountant will understand we absolutely needed a macro lens.
