Were you relying on autofocus? The AF could well have got confused when faced with a flat subject...

Timiano - 300V - in Tv mode shutter speed is easy to select and in Av mode the aperture is easy to select, using the main dial. In Manual Mode shutter speed is easy to select but aperture needs an additional button press to the main dial. Not too bad, as you say, once you get used to it.
