Digital SLR vs Compact
Oddly enough I did some experimental shots today with cars speeding down the road (but not panning) across the field of view about 15 feet away. Quite a reasonable test I hope you'll agree. The AF was a problem (but that was quickly overcome by switching to continuous AF). I did not find any difficulty in capturing the image, using the LCD screen.....seeing what I was taking for real! :-) ...

Digital SLR - pls recommend
Horses for courses! If whatever type of camera you have suits your photographic needs, be happy!..if not find which type suits your style & requirements. For me it's an SLR (D) I agree a 'prosumer' will be capable for the 'average' photographer, personally I will strive to become 'above average'! Some day I may achieve it! Joe B

Digital SLR or Film SLR
I own a very old digital camera which was state of the art 3 years ago, but the pictures from it are truly awful. Compare it to what you get now from a camera half the price and you can imagine what will be available in another couple of years. I still shoot lots of film, because I like using an SLR and can't afford the EOS 1D that I played with at Focus :( What you should really think about is...

Canon EOS 300D Digital SLR
What defines a pro photographer? Do you have to be doing it as a full-time job, have a degree, or just making money at it? Anybody care to throw around some definitions? ;)

Medium Format SLR or Digital SLR
(Secondhand medium format is cheap)...Don't agree AT ALL! Medium format is still taking itself SOO SERIOUSLY. Look at some of the prices Hasselblad are still trying to get,and the Mamiya 7! GAWD! Niceish rangefinder camera with good couple of lenses but, no polaroid, no interchangable backs. I've never met a pro who'd look at one..rich man's toy. Why, because they know their days are numbered...

Adam, You are scanning slides and losing quality, and they look dark. This sounds as if the scanner is not set correctly. Dark areas can also be lightened in Photoshop. A scanned slide should resolve a great deal of detail. Jeff

Which Digital SLR To Go For?
Hi Kinfatric, Just to give you a view from an Olympus E-300 owners point of view. Like you I was debating which DSLR to go for when I found out I could use my existing OM lenses off my OM4 on it with a free adaptor from Olympus Europe. This hasn't arrived yet (only had the camera a week). Scene modes on the E-300 are very handy way of setting the controls for a given situation, with setting...

Do digital SLR's make it too easy......
Camera club judges can too often by pompous and ignorant in the subject, sorry, opinionated in the subject. I am no great photographer but I stopped entering inter-club competitions for this reason. Someone who has spent years judging the same thing may not be the best to judge the new, we may grow older but too often we do not grow wiser.

LCD on Digital SLR
Full blown Digital SLRs have an Electronically-controlled focal-plane shutter to control it's exposure just the same as a film based SLR. However SLRs like the Olympus E10/20 which have a traditional mirror box viewfinder so you are looking through the lens as any other SLR, these have a combination shutter. Up to 1/640 sec. this uses a mechanical shutter but over this speed it will go into a ...

HELP - What Digital SLR?
John - good to be back - thanks... Adam, As John says you have two choices really. 1) Use your resident fiancee to buy the camera and bring it over here. You will need a MACK international warrenty to allow it to be repaired in Europe as the Canon warrenty is US/Canada only (and then one for Europe/Japan). It is reasonably cheap and is the one offered by many eBay sellers who give an "...

Nikon D70 Digital SLR
Another advantage of dig is I went to do some pics of a whale stranded on a beach today. By the time we got to it, the light was going and it was raining hard. Didn't fancy changing films in the rain so left the roll of 400 I had in the F4, barely enough light for a pic. Zapped the Iso up on D100 until I could get a reasonable speed to hand hold and got some half-decent pics. Bit dark on ...
