I migrated from CS2 to CS5 and I'm seriously impressed. All the basic stuff's the same (obviously) but CS5 is a definite improvement over CS2 in the way in which it can carry that stuff out. It's also a lot quicker even on my faithful old XP-shod Dell!

The files are standard tiff's created from the pull down menu File>Save As; I can't get to the files as the PC hangs when I get to the folder its stored in, but will be large (probably too large) maybe 1.5GB should really have used psd or psb. Just thought on the original file was from Photomatix 4.0 via Lightroom 3 (plugin option), could this be part of the problem? If I could get to it and...

This is not a new problem. If you convert to greyscale or otherwise force the printer to use just the black ink cartidge, you will have neutral monochromes. Unfortunately this results in a very small number of tonal levels (possibly as low as 50 due to half toning) and it does not look good along side a high quality monochrome. The obvious answer is to leave the image in RGB and thus use combin...

Photoshop

I would suggest pixlr / GIMP combo for a free choice.

Manual for CS5

I have the martin evening book, it explains things well "IF" you understand the statemnts being made on the subject so you do need to be fairly advanced. Content aware works well if you have the right subject for it to work, if you dont as most say its a pile of poo. CS5 is by far the best advancement for photographers though love the new edge tools and puppet warp and the new brush tools e...

Don't worry, Jas it's not compulsory! Well, certainly not as compelling as my old Rollei Enlarger was (in its time :) )

Yes it was me that unwittingly started the PSP v PS thread, but if a group is created about paintshop pro I'd be very interested to learn more about it

For instance my scores are with 20 history states. WIN 7 64bit Core2 Q8300 4GB DDR2 800 500MB HDD CS5 28 seconds (1 history state) Why did you run it with 20 history states?? Surely the results will all be completely meaningless if we're all setting things up differently. 20 is the default, probably left it at that.

These days ACR+ CS5 for RAW, CS5 only for JPEG. I could - I am sure - do a lot more in ACR, but I'm so used to using Photoshop, I find it easier to just take the image straight into CS5 from ACR once the basic RAW conversion has been done. The easy integration of the two bits of software make for a rapid workflow. I don't need anything like Lightroom for the volume of images I process...

Lightroom or CS5

I personally don't think it is an either or decision. I use Lightroom for 85% of my work and only edit in CS5 when there is a specific need to i.e. cloning etc. If I had to make an either or decision it would have to be Lightroom but I sure would miss the features in CS5. A decision I would not like to have to make. Steve

CS5 hanging

Yes.. I honestly don't think photoshop as such was the problem - just one corrupt image (I'm glad I didn't ditch it tho ... it did rather well)
