Photoshop- White background!
Quote:you'll get white with 2 stops more you'll also get a lot of 'blow back' of light. To avoid this use a tip I picked up from Michael Birt Turn off the main light/lights and with the model in place take a test shot with just the background lights firing. You should have a silhouette. If you see the blow back, known as spill, on any area of the model adjust the model position, the background ...

How do I get a true white background?
Simpler solution, get a large soft box and put that behind your subject! The usual rule of thumb is to light the background 2 stops more than the subject. You may wish to adjust that to suit.

Thanks for all the great advice. I will try some of the above techniques out and see what happens!

White will photograph white if you expose it correctly; thus it needs to be lit sufficiently. IMHO 2 stops more than the main light is overkill and will give 'blow back' difficulties particularly in a small space. If a background is evenly lit; half a stop more should be all you need unless the paper/cloth is extremely creased or dirty.

Still life 'white background'
I thought that metering a 18% grey card would give the right exposure for the white background. Any shadow need to be worked away by the right lighting.

Yes, I agree, two lights as the main, and use the speedlite on the highest stop behind the subject, and it will highlight the background as well as give a nice highlight around the edges of peoples heads to give a more interesting group shot, that's if you place the flash in a correct position. I'm investing in the 500/500R, how is the kit so far? How much was the power pack? Or was it incl...

I've got a black backdrop too, so I'm currently playing with that arrangement, which is much easier with one flash.

The simple answer is to set the background light 1.5 to 2 stops higher than your main light. Meter for your main light and you'll get a lovely pure white background.

Hi Dave Thanks for the offer but it's all done now - made out of Opaque perspex (got some cheap offcuts from a local signmaker) rather than cardboard. I am about to have a muck around with it this weekend and will post the results on the forum. Cheers Brinley
