Recently bought the new Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6G ED VR Lens to go on my D600 and was wondering if I could get away with a 1.7 teleconverter or should i stick with the 1.4?
I know the 2x converter won't auto focus properly above f8.

I personally would not use a tc on a lens that is
a: Not a 2.8 or f4 lens
b: Not at a constant Aperture through the zoom range.
Got close to the subject then crop if need be.
Do a search...same question was asked 2 days ago...
...I had this lens and it worked fine with a Kenko 1.4 TP 300.

.....try before you buy...good luck .....Mike
The most you could use would be the 1.4. I have used 1.7 with 2.8 lenses and there is a degradation in the picture to the extent that I would not print it. With a 1.4 your F stop would be up to a F8.0 and that leaves you having to push the ISO or dropping the speed.
....they told him that it couldn't be done
....with a smile he went straight to it
....he tackled the job that couldn't be done
....and couldn't do it.

Maybe those replying do appreciate there is a new version
Nikon confirm autofocus with a 1.4 converter on an f8 compatible body http://imaging.nikon.com/lineup/lens/zoom/telephotozoom/af-s_80-400mmf_45-56g_ed...
The old version can autofocus with a Kenko 1.4x though autofocus performance is somewhat less than Nikon's minimum standard.
Autofocus with the 1.7x is extremely unlikely at 400mm as the effective aperture is smaller than f8 at the 400mm zoom setting.
