3 Cameras to choose from!

29 May 2012 10:19AM
Having used a few different cameras over the years i find myself in a position to buy either of these:

Canon 50D
Canon 500D
Nikon D90

I have tried the 3 and like them all. I know the 50D and the d90 and more Semi-pro in design and features.

I am dithering between the 3 and need a push in the right direction.

As stated, i like how the 3 feel. I take pics of my young kids and holiday snaps and like to take shots indoors a lot.

I was going to buy one of the above (Which i dont know yet) and marry it with a 50mm prime as i do love primes.

Any guidance would be really good thanks.

Welcome to EPZ, Tony. Smile

Is there any reason why you would not want more recent cameras - the ones you list have all been superseded.

Money basically.

Go for the cheapest camera/lens combination you can find. None of the cameras will disappoint. And it does not sound as if you will be investing heavily into a range of lenses, so you can always sell the camera later on and get something completely different.

Thanks. Just got to decide which one!

Go for the 50D, it's controls are in my opinion better and it's better built, in that it has a mag. alloy body as opposed to plastic

A few very talented people here use a 50D - i always almost check out the camera lens combo on pics i like and the 50D is often there. The Lens of choice is a nifty 50, the 50mm f1.8 mk2 is a lovely lens indoors.
The pics you want of the Kids indoors means you want good ISO performance and a fast-ish shutter to freeze their movement with that f1.8 lens. The 50D has both higher and lower ISO than the D90.
Here is a compare site that also say 50D - http://www.cameralabs.com/reviews/Canon_EOS_50D/noise_2.shtml

50D everytime, it's an even better camera than Canon's latest equivalent the 60D, the only real difference being the 60D has video.....Quite why anybody would want video on an SLR Lord only knows?????......If I wanted video I'd buy a proper video camera!

The 500d is good....But not as good as the 50D

Nikon is good too, but you'd have to grow the obligatory beard and rush out to buy some sandals with than one Tongue

Just to throw a spanner in the works, i have been eying up a Panasonic G3 too. Portable and apparently good IQ.

What are your views guys? Ta

I normally use a Canon 5D MkII but recently bought the Panasonic G3 as I wanted something more portable for street photography. Excellent IQ & has the big advantage that it has an adjustable screen and viewfinder. However, I'm not keen on the feel of the camera. For me it is too light and its size means that I'm inclined to find my fingers get in the way of the controls. I also find it frustrating to have to go to the menu for many of the functions. Horses for courses, I guess. Vicky
