I had a some film done by my local Tesco in the days when they processed on-site and the negs came back well covered in muck. I had to give the film a good wash before doing a hi-res scan. Not exactly convenient when they've cut it into short lengths!

Professional labs charge a bit more but work to a much higher standard of cleanliness.
