    Hello All

I see that the 5D Mk III has a soon to be released firmware update (version 1.1.4) which will allow AF on lens and convertor combinations up to combined max aperture of F8. Firmware Update Info
The 400mm 5.6L shows in charts Ive looked at as only being manual focus with a 1.4X convertor attached.
Has anyone any views if the 400mm 5.6 L with a 1.4X convertor will achieve AF with this firmware update without taping pins etc

Are you using a Canon tc or a third party (Kenko / Tamron)?
The Canon tc tells the camera that the minimum aperture is f5.6 or f8 and the camera will refuse to AF - when you tape the pins you are effectively cutting the communication that goes through those pins. If you use the Kenko/Tamron tc they do not communicate that information (the pins don't do the same job) so even on my 7D+70-300 at 300mm (f5.6) the camera will try and AF and in really good light it can hit the target. I see no reason that if the firmware allows you to AF up to f8 then camera will do so with the Canon tc without taping any pins.
