I bought a new laptop a few months ago and took it back to the shop because it could not do 5dmk2 raw files. I am now needing another laptop and would like to know if there are any 5d mk2 users out there that have recently bought a new laptop that has worked with 5d mk2 files without having to do things to the laptop. My preferred laptops would either be a toshiba or a dell. Any recommendations would be good. thanks
Lucian
When you say without having to do things to the laptop are you meaning you don't want to have to upgrade the hardware or you don't want to have to install any software? It'll help others here to help you if you have a budget in mind too - most decent business or multimedia level laptops will work with 5DII raw files easily whereas some of the lower end budget models may struggle a little more.
Memory is usually the most critical factor (once you've got as far as a half decent processor and graphics card). At least 4GB will help, or preferably 8GB. I'm sure others will chip in.
I use photoshop elements on my current toshiba and it works fine. I bought another toshiba and it does not do 5dmk2 raw files. I dont know what software or hardware is as i am not a technically minded person. I just want to be able to put the laptop on, put photoshop elements on it and download my files and work on them.
So did the new laptop just handle the raw files too slowly to be usable or did it give some kind of message saying it couldn't open them? The former would indicate that the laptop itself (the actual machine) is lacking in power whereas the latter might just be that you need to download an update from Adobe to handle newer raw files.
I did download thinks from adobe that did not work. the laptop could not download raws in to photoshop because it could not support them, the only thing that it could do was download them in to dpp and i dont like that program. I have a dell laptop in the house that does not work with raw either yet my current toshiba that is about 3 years old works with them no problem. thats why l dont understand why a newer toshiba does not work. I think its something to do with the version of windows that the newer ones are running but i could be wrong.
Are you trying to edit the photos? If so then you will be able to do so as long as the Elements package supports them
Are you trying to view the photos in Microsoft viewer? This can be a problem if the laptop does not have a command called a codec that translates the Canon RAW file from .CR2 to whatever it is that Microsoft Viewer needs. You can download this codec from the Canon website.
Someone else had this problem very recently - do a search on EPZ for the term 'codec'

If you can kick it, then it is hardware. your laptop, mouse, keyboard, screen are all hardware.
The programs you run on your computer - like word or elements are software.
If i go and get a new toshiba laptop again do you think it would definately have a way of working with 5dmk2 files. If so i will get one and just persevere with it. Could i maybe need an updated version of elements, i dont know why elements 8 would have a problem as it is younger than 5d mk2 i think.
Hi I think to echo previous users you are getting confused with hardware and software. Photoshop Elemts 8.0 will open the 5D Mk2 files as I have been using that software with my 5DMk 2 until very recently. You need to make sure that the software is up to date but if you check camera raw in Adobe you will see that the original version did indeed open the CR2 files of the 5D Mk 2. Displaying the raw files in applications like Explorer or Microsoft viewer requires the Canon raw codec but this wont work with 64 bit versions of Windows 7 .
The hardware issue if indeed you have one is likely to be related to memory and again Adobe have quite a lot of advice on their website just search for system requirement for Elements 8.0 . My understanding though is that the key thing is memory the more you have the better but 32 bit systems are limited to a maximum amount of 4GB of RAM but even the latest version of Elemenst only need 2GB of RAM. So my suggestion would be to look at a laptop that include Windows 7 64 bit with at leat 4GB of RAM and which can be upgraded to 8GB or more in case you ever want to run full Photoshop
Lucian,
"Handling Raw files" is not a property of any given laptop (or other computer). The computer needs to run a software package that you have to install on your laptop. It is that software package that then determines whether or not you can work with any particular type of Raw file. As long as your chosen computer has the processing capacity to run your chosen software, then you are OK.
