I was considering buying an A4 printer for my photos & CD's until I thought that 8"x10" was rather limiting in terms of aspect, especially for landscapes. I then measured an A4 sheet to discover that it was just under 12''long and just over 8" wide which is all rather inconvenient for 8x12 prints. Please excuse my lack of knowledge on printing etc but my question is can an A4 printer print 8x12 with a 1/4" missing on the length & is this an accepted practise?

I would not worry about what is accepted practice, be brave and try it & see if it works for you.
I wanted to know if it would work before I spent the cash.
Many A4 printers will print a greater length than the 29.7cm of A4. You could always cut some A3 to the size you want and set it as a custom size in the printer configuration.

Didn't know you could do that, I suppose I could always crop to A4 instead of 8x12.
Or use the same aspect ratio and print to A4 length and slightly narrower than 8 inches.
see if you can find a printer that takes roll as well as sheet, then you can print any length,
many a3 printers do this not 100% sure with a4 printers
I need a printer that does CD's too & the A3 ones are way too expensive at the moment so I'm looking at a Canon PIXMA iX6550. It only does sheets as far as I know, it's no big deal sending away for larger than A4 prints if this printer does everything else well.
canon 5250 does cds
Epson P50 does cds and borderless prints.
