Hi - every technique tutorial I read only ever talks about using Photoshop. Is Acdsee any good in comparison? I was given Acdsee software for nothing and I am thinking that there is probably a reason for that. What can Photoshop do that Acdsee can't?

    Cheers!!

Hi Nichola...though ACD is mainly an image viewing tool they have improved the editing side of it
I run ACD Pro which supports most RAW files and for normal JPegs it is as fast as you can get..Quite a few folks on here agree with me
Unfortunately it isn't a freebie but since I have run earlier versions for quite a few years it has just been a matter of paying for the upgrade
Obviously Photoshop is far superior for editing purposes though
What version of ACD have you been given?

    Hope this is of help

I believe there's also an ACDSee Photo editing module - do you have that? Never used it myself, though I use ACDSee 8.1 Pro for organising my pics. I prefer C1 for the RAW processing, but the crop tool, where you can maintain original aspect ratio is really handy!

I use ACDPRO more than I use PS, just find it quicker and easier for little tweeks when I need to (which is regularly!) Also as a viewing / file management tool it is excellent.

    Hi Nicola,
Just realised that we haven't really answered your question; differences between PS and ACDSee (i'll assume as a photo editor). Generally ACDSee's editing tools are basic and they apply to the whole image, whereas PS has support for various methods for selecting parts of the image (including feathering to soften the selection edges) and brushes to selectively apply a wide range of effects. PS can be expanded with plug-ins to automate effects and support layers in which effects can be applied additively with various blending modes. Does that help? I guess there's a reason for it being the de facto tool!
    Steve.

I think it's around the £500 mark in the UK, significantly cheaper if you're a student (about £200). I would guess similar in Australia, but can't confirm, sorry!
