As some may recall (see here if you don't) I do an annual count of active members based on the criterion used, by EPZ, for the Members' Portfolios section. Up to the last count, the criterion was members who had contributed to the forum and/or gallery in the past 3 months.
However, this has now been changed to members who have logged in, in the past 3 months i.e. they don't need to have contributed.
Therefore this year's count is not comparable with previous years and is, inevitably, much higher. It will not be until next year's count, we will be able to judge whether active membership is increasing or decreasing. Anyway, the figure on the new basis is 16,929.
Quote: What is the number for contributing members?
It would be possible to get this from a detailed analysis of the 16,929 members, but I do have a life.
I imagine the IT team could give us the figure fairly easily.
However, assuming it hasn't changed greatly from the last couple of years (i.e. around 6000-7000 mark), the change in the criterion shows about 60% of members who log in don't contribute either to the gallery or the forum and are content to be watchers.
Lol! Another interesting comparison is the number of unique visitors a month, which EPZ advertises as 800k+ and the number of active members - about 17k on the current basis.
That's a huge disparity and, on the face of it, a trifle odd. Even if only 1% of the visitors, who are not already members, signed up it would mean a large increase in active membership.
But it may be that many of these 'unique visitors' just stumble upon EPZ when Googling something - and move swiftly on. So to describe all of them as visitors might be stretching a point! ![]()

. . . or simply aren't here any more.
I mean that they're not here any more in the way that you and I are.
Someone who's logged in once in the last twelve months makes an excellent statistic but doesn't make a huge contribution.
Well if its like the rest of the web, the number of people who contribute are always going to be dwarfed by the number of lurkers.
