Am I correct in assuming that when I use Adobe Camera Raw to open and carry out edits to a raw image, the original raw file remains still available, even after I have made my edits and saved the adjusted file ? My understanding is that when I subsequently open an edited and saved raw file, the note in the Settings window which says "image settings" refers to my last edited version. If I want to revert to the original raw file as it came out of the camera, I simply change "image settings" to "camera raw defaults" from the drop-down box, thus I have not lost my original raw file at any stage. I'd be grateful if someone familiar with Camera Raw could tell me whether I am correct in this understanding, please.

When you edit a RAW file in ACR nothing is actually done to the RAW file istelf. Any fiddling you do is save in a xmp file I think.

Thanks for getting back, Meredith. So, if I understand you correctly, each time I open my edited raw, the edits I have made are re-applied to it when it opens, but when I close it again, it is saved as the original raw ?

To my knowledge the RAW files are treated as read only ones, when you save in adobe does it not save it as a TIF or an adobe special files? As stated previously, the only file altered is the one that tells the program what corrections to apply in order to make the TIF file.

John: it is still saved as a .crw file (in my case, as I use Canon), and the edits applied are recorded as metadata, so presumably when you open it up, this metadata is apppied to the file you open, but the original is still there underneath it all unchanged.
