    hi,
no, you can't edit raw files with photoshop 7 , or view them.
raw files in photoshop came out with CS2 .
but you can use adobe lightroom or another program like it and convert them to a tiff or jpeg and then edit them in ps 7. hope thats a bit of help.

erm... CS handles RAW - BUT one needs to be aware of what camera's it will handle. If you intend using one of the recent cameras then CS2 is a safer bet.

Actually guys, version 1.0 of Camera RAW was an extra cost plug-in for PS7. The camera support was very limited and you won't be able to get it now.

You could do a web search find out if it's of use and ask adobe nicely, but I think you'd find it better to get a seperate app like C1.

If you are going to upgrade from PS7, you'd be well advised to do it when CS3 is available. Adobe are tightening up on upgrades and PS7 is the earliest version that will let you go to CS3 for the upgrade price (about £160).

Photoshop has come a long way since v7, though you will need a reasonable spec computer to make it fly. As for other raw convertor options:

    DxO
Phase One C1 (LE version costs about £70)
    Bibble
    Lightroom (also from Adobe)
and there are others, but above are the most popular ones.

Pixmantec Rawshooter was bought by Adobe. It was highly rated by users.

Later versions of Photoshop Elements also use the Adobe Camera Raw plug-in, but the features are more limited.

Thanks for the help. i'm not sure I want to spend more money at the moment. I might just stick with JPEG's and PS7 at the moment

Of course, it also depends on which DSLR you choose. Some of them come with acceptably good RAW software. The Canons, for instance, come with DPP, which an OK product.

You could always upgrade Photoshop to CS3 and use Adobe Camera Raw v4 - the same version as in Lightroom.

If you're upgrading to a Canon 400d and don't want to spend any extra money at present, I would suggest you use the Canon RAW editing software that comes with the camera export the highest quality .jpg conversion into PS7 for any addtional alterations you want to make .
