Photoshop CS is a superb program. I've been using it since the end of June and I'm still on a steep learning curve. Once you start getting into the program's features, then you start to realise its capabilities.
The much-acclaimed 'healing brush' is a superb tool. Another tool I really like is the 'extract' command in the filter menu - that is superb for extracting a subject from the background, particularly if it has fluffy edges.
I also like the 'photo filters' tool that mimics to some extent common photo filters such as warm-up filters.
Since V7, the file browser has been given a number of enhancements, making it a good file management tool.
As with v7, you can record 'actions' that you regularly apply to your photos eg. adding copyright info.
Invest in some good books and you'll get the best from this excellent program. For a complete Photoshop beginner, I'd heartily recommend 'Photoshop CS Studio Techniques' by Ben Wilmore. His style of writing is typically American, but he takes great pains to explain things very thoroughly. Martin Evening's book is also excellent.
Scott Kelby's books are 'how to' books that take you step-by-step through various manipulations. Good for getting you started, but not detailed enough to give you a sound understanding of the program.
I hope this helps.

Top program, as everyone else has said.
To Jo's books, I'll add Real World Photoshop CS by Blatner & Fraser.
No - you'd need some DVD or CD burning software for that. Photoshop is just for image manipulation
Hi Barry
I think you'll find Ben takes a lot of the mystique out of Photoshop. He takes great pains to avoid gettting caught up in the jargon and it's not a book I've got disillusioned with and abandoned after the first few chapters.
Martin's book is more 'to the point' so if you're not so familiar with the jargon, it's a little harder for the novice to comprehend. I should add that both give you access to the images in the book so you can practise the things described in the various chapters.
Happy reading!
Jo
Photoshop CS - Wouldn't be without it.
Still learning how to use it though.
