help please! I have just puchased a new laptop loaded with windows 7 to use for photos only, I dont want to put it on the internet , I would like to install adobe photoshop elements 8 on it, the software suppliers that I have spoken to say I must have a internet connection to activate adobe, is this true or is there a way round it, would be glad for any info. Rod.

I'm going to go out on a limb and assume that if you contact Adobe direct there will be a workaround for this (at least back in the day before broadband there was Tongue ). Chances are you'll have to enter a code or somesuch to activate the product manually and they will give you the code

Failing that download Zonealarm for free onto another computer - copy the install exe over to the laptop and then install it there. Connect to the net and activate the product and then log off and you should be perfectly fine.

My copy of Elements 5 came on a DVD with the Activation Code printed on the envelope. Didn't have to go anywhere near the InterWebNet thingy.

I'd just connect it to my router for the few seconds it takes to activate. No need to open a web browser. Very little danger that I can see.

    So would I.
In fact, don't you need to download updates from time to time?
    And what about plug-ins?

If you buy a boxed copy, it will include the code/activation/license key which is all that is needed to 'activate' - ie use - PSE. The only reason (apart from updates etc) that you might need to go online is to register your copy.

Unless they've changed things since I last bought an Adobe product (about a year ago) registration isn't compulsory. I prefer to do it to get auto notifications of updates . And the fact that as a registered user of PSE, I got an offer to upgrade to full PS CS4 at half price definitely made it worthwhile for me Smile

Thank you all for your help, Ihave now managed to have a chat online with adobe on my other pc and they tell me the is no problem I can activate it on the phone, even gave me the number which is = 0800 328 4536 so I can now buy the software and do it that way, there is another reason for not putting the laptop online which is my main pc is on windows xp useing tiscali (talktalk) with a sagum 800 broadband modem and according to tiscali windows 7 (which is on the laptop) wont work with the sagum modem, they tell me that I will need to buy a new modem which I realy dont want to do. thanks again, Rod

Surely that's going to catch a few people out?

Just share the internet connection from your Xp box. Having said that modems do not cost much and often you get given one for free from the ISP.

Thanks for that , strawman, not to sure about one thing on instructions, it says host pc must have one network adaptor that is configured to connect to the internal network, is that something that is already built into the pc, Rod

I was guessing your Sagem modem connects via a USB port so your computer should have an eithernet port on the back. In which case you could run an eithernet cable between the two computers, but you need to get a crossover type cable from a computer shop. But if you have the phone activation it may be best to stick to that or get a new wireless router as it will no doubt offer a faster internet connection and allow you to have a wireless internet link to the laptop

I am getting the idea I think, tell me when I buy a router is the router a modem as well or do I have to buy a router and modem, sorry to be a pain but my thing is photography and repairing cars, not into pc's Rod.

The one I got given to me by my internet provider has the modem and wireless router and 4 eithernet ports built in. so you connect it to your main computer via an eithernet cable (there should be one in the box) and the first time you have to set it up for your ISP etc and enable the wireless settings. After that it is a run alone device so you can go direct to the internet via the wireless connection from your lap top without the main PC running or they can share it.

At the moment ours is set to allow a desk machine and a playstation to access the internet then wireless there is a lap top, a Wiii (great for iPlayer) and the kids iPods. I know probably too many devices, but it works well. It sounds mad but seldom more than 3 devices are active at any time.

This is similar to what I have
