A friend of mine has asked me to take some promo pictures for a play she is producing. As she was stuck and had no money to pay someone else to do it I said I'd help her out.

I have to take portraits from the waist up of three people in the same shot. I've got no studio lighting only a single 580 EX speedlite. The space i've got to work in is fairly large and have some dark and light sheets to provide a backdrop. Any advice on how I could make them look as professional as possible for her.

Thanks in advance for any tips/advice

With the 580 speedlight I would possibly use it as a bounce flash, possibly bouncing it off a large sheet of white card held up behind you by somebody. It would soften the shot but by using the bounce method you will get much softer lighting. i.e. swivel the flash around so it faces behind you and tilt to an angle of about 45 degrees upwards, get someone to hold the card behind you and above you so that it catches the flash and reflects back on your subjects (don't have the card holder too close to the flash, but enough to catch it, about 4 feet back).

Using the basic equipment you have.....
Stick a diffuser on the flash, don't have one ? put the panel down.,take them outside, preferably in the shade as dslr's like to blow out in sunlight with a nice natural background, use av mode on around 100mm f5.6 to soften any background yet any less and you wont keep the group of 3 sharp and press the button.
Ideas, a old country house or mansion nearby with public right of way ?
under a tree with the house in the background, nice and early so the lights better and public are not around
    Nice, bright and tight !
And you wont need to spend money, as you are not getting paid, that's a good idea, because free work will and never has ever lead to any paid work.
If that's not good enough for her you need to pass her on to a pro
