    Hi all,

I am looking for some advice. I was previously very active in my photography but as time has gone on and work has increased I find I do not have a great deal of time for photography (if you look at my page I have not uploaded in a long time). I have a 5d mark II which I find a bit unwieldy to take on trips or to events where I want to take photos.

Really I am looking for a few of pieces of advice:
    1) How much should I be looking to get for a second hand 5d mk II body which is around 2 years old?
    2) Would you sell to local independent shop or go to classifieds?
    3) Sell as bundle or separate items? I also have 17-40L, 24-105L, 100-400L and sigma 105
    4) Probably most contentious question, what camera to change to? Really what I am now looking for is something smaller, more portable, cheaper etc.

Thanks for any help you can offer.

    James

One more thing - what do people think of the Panasonic Vs Olympus micro 4/3 cameras?

2/ I would not sell to a shop, classifieds or if you are familiar with the potential pitfalls Ebay.

3/ Sell separately you are unlikely to find a buyer who wants the whole lot unless they are getting a bargain and can make a nice profit selling them on.

    2) A shop will give you much, much less than what you could achieve with a private sale. The classified section of this website is a good option.

    3) Sell separately. The chance of finding a buyer that wants each and every item and all purchased at the same time will be extremely unlikely. You'll also get a better price if you sell the items individually.

    4) What about something in Canon's G range, i.e. G9, G10, G11 (I don't know what the current model is)

Consider a top of the range bridge camera. You have it all in one body and they are a lot of fun to use.
I wouldn't sell the SLR as you will almost certainly return to serious photography in the not too distant future and you wouldn't want to start all over again.

If you can afford to keep all your kit then that's what I would do. You never know when you will get the urge to pick it up again. As for a replacement, then take a look at the Canon Powershot range.

You are likely to get the top price by selling on Ebay. If you take the usual sensible precautions (e.g. only accept payment by Paypal and only post to the verified Paypal address by Special Delivery) it is perfectly safe.

As mentioned above, sell each item separately rather than as a bundle.

You have some superb kit, if you don't need to sell it, keep hold of it, at least for a while, just in case you change your mind. Another option for you is to swap your Sigma or 17-40 lens for a 2nd hand top of the range bridge camera. There's bound to be someone around with a suitable option for you. You can exchange cash either way on the deal as appropriate.

I would love to own a 5d mk11 and a 100-400l, so if you are fed up with them and want to give them to a good home, I'd make them very welcomeGrin or let me know your very lowest price for both Smile

I would go halfway house; if you are doing very little photography keep the 5D MkII and 24-105 and sell the rest. I agree sell the items separately in the classifieds or on Ebay with the usual precautions.

    Peter.

Thanks for all advice so far. No comments regarding the olympus or panasonic cameras so far, is that a comment in itself?

I think selling the kit is the way forward, I don't think I can justify buying a separate camera and then keeping as a just in case. In which case, back to the what sort of price people would be willing to pay for the body or the lenses. Realise this may be a tricky question as some people may be interested in them!

Also have a canon speedlite 430 ex II which will sell as well.

I have no complaints with my Oly SLRs, and there are people I know through Oly specific forums who rave about the Pen range, enough to trade in their E-30 for a Pen, and Olympus are throwing a lot of weight behind the micro lens.

The high end lenses from Olympus are very good, although the camera is a bit prone to noise at anything above iso400, I'm not sure howthe smaller cameras cope. One plus side is you do not need to have the latest lenses to have the same technology, the cameras have built in IS - allthough dont think that this will bring the price of the glass down, if you buy like for like then the Oly lens will be expensive the 300mm L series can be picked for about £1200, the 300mm ED equivalent is £6000 at warehouse express (although the Oly is f2.8 and the Canon f4)

So there you have it, I don't know anyone with a micro camera - although Oly think it is the way forward, so the pen does deserve a look.

If you go the eBay route, be aware of what the total charges are likely to be. One alternative is to sell them on commission through a dealer such as Ffordes who will price each item and give you 80% of the selling price. For their 20% they will advertise and provide a warranty and I've successfully sold a few items this way over the past few months.

    Hi James,
If it's any help I have a Panasonic G1 (Micro 4 Thirds) camera & 14-45 lens, & I love it to bits......I've had some cracking results from it (in my P/F)......& presumably the G2 is even better (?), so if you
fancy one then I would say, go for it !......I've certainly no regrets buying mine.....

I also use a Canon 5D, which as you say can be a bit unwieldy to carry around for long periods, & the Pan. G1 makes a lovely carry anywhere camera.....admittedly not a compact, but the beautiful
sharp images from it (for me) make it a pleasure to use.....

    Regards.....Nn.
