Hi everyone, hope you can help me again!
Have purchased a great bit of kit. The Canon LiDE Scaner 80. See link below for full details.
www.canon.co.uk/about_us/news/consumer_releases/lide_80.asp
I want to scan in really old pics of my Mum who unfortunately died when I was little, want to keep them for posterity and for my kids!. It is meant to be able to reduce the scratches but I can't work out how! It says in the spec:
For scanning photo prints, Canon introduces QARE Level 2, an advanced software filter which intelligently checks images for the same defects as FARE Level 2, and corrects them, with a single click.
Does anyone know how this works?? I have also got Photoshop 7 (novice user) and the Canon Photo Studio 5 and Elements 2.0 + other bits that came with scanner.
Have worked out how to scan multiples, but can't get rid or scratches. This machine is meant to do it effortlessly, as I have around 200 pics I want to scan. Also, am I right is assuming 1200 dpi is the best resolution to scan at ??
Look forward to lots of replies from you helpful lot out there! ... where would I be without you all.
Thanks a million.

Hi Debs,
I'm not familiar with the scanner you've got so I can't really help you with that- but you're right about what the specs say, it does say that the scanner does all of the restoration. However, I'm not sure I'd trust a scanner to so something so subjective.
With Photoshop 7 you've got a great tool there in the healing brush- it can mend stratches and remove marks very, very easily. My workflow has been to scan files at as high a resolution as possible so that I have the most information to work on. I use the healing brush to remove dust/scratches/marks and the clone tool to rebuild any areas.
This site is great for learning about photo restoration.
Hope that helps!
Hi and thanks for the tips, I will have a go.
I have used the healing brush, but I was rather hoping that their might be a quicker way to do rather a lot of old photos!!
Thanks for the link to the site, it looks great, I am going to have a good read!
Out of interest, much of my digital photography is Rugby oriented as my husband trains an under 10 yrs team which my son plays in, so I use my Canon EOS D60 most weekends! ... even got a picture in the local paper this weekend!
Thanks
Debs
Congratulations on getting a photo in your local paper! That's great
I've only shot a little bit of rugby myself (I tend to play rather than watch) but I had a few good results from a tournament I went to in the summer. Apart from the blurred ones and the ones where I'd missed the action completely that is!
As for restoration, don't forget the patch tool. That can be very quick at mending large areas. I hope you can figure your scanner out though as it sounds like it could be very powerful. Let us know how you get on!
