Have a look at this, Looks like no AF on a D40....Sad

    Link to KR review

You really need to look at the 70-300 ED/VR version....!!!

Apart from VR its a much better lens optically....Wink

    Way To Go CathyT...Smile

No problem Steve, Just to add a little, Ken R, Is reffering to an earlier version of the ED lens, He probably wrote that review before the ED VR version was born....Wink

I have had the 70-300 ED/VR version for several years now, And I'm still very pleased with it....Smile

There is an image in my PF called " Splash " this was taken with the 70-300 ED VR Nikon.....Wink

Optically Nikon say in their MTF there is negligible difference between the G and the discontinued ED-D.
Build quality of the G is much lower than the ED.
Buying the G at about 50 second hand (you have not mentioned a price - this is probably a fair price) could be a reasonable deal. At one stage it was priced as low as 100 new. In theory it is still current - but not on Nikon UK's price list

The current 70-300 VR is better than the ED, has VR, is Nikon's top selling FX zoom, but is in a different price league.

folks, we are at one with which is the better lens, and we know that the AF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 G Nikkor Lens it will not auto, on tomcats D40, but will the 70-300 ed vr lens or the current 70-300 VR fully work on the D40?

The 70-300 ED VR lens is also AF-S so it will focus OK on D40.
