Hi Guys. I've been trawling the net for a few weeks now for an 'alternative' bag designed to house cameras. The only thing that seems a bit different is the 'Crumpler' brand, but to be honest, I'm not overly impressed with the aesthetics of the range..

Any ideas guys? Weblinks? ebay links?

    Cheers,
    Michael

I use a Mini Trekker AW, Nova 5 AW, Offroad 1 and a Slingshot 200 which I have just aquired, fantastic for holidays with a lightweight kit. Lowepro's the only way to go!!

For me: "waterproof", "durable", "protective" and "reliable" are far more important than "aesthetics". Doesn't your kit worth protection?

I just took delivery of a Tamrac Expedition 7 backpack and am very happy with my choice. Plenty of room, a decent waterproof cover that goes over the zip, a really good harness system. Not walked too far with it yet but what I have done, it has proved to be very comfortable

I had a lowepro slingshot 200 for Christmas & am very happy with it. Bit like a tardis, seemes to absorb alot of equipment in a small space. Easy to carry & open when out & much less of a strain on the shoulder than a normal bag. Only complaint would be that my long zoom won't fit in, but I just get my son to carry that & my tripod.

I got a slingshot for Christmas too, and am blown away by the design, very comfortable on the back then sling it around the front and the side opening becomes the top. Forget about aesthetics, this is sleek and practical, brilliant design Smile

I use a Lowepro backpack when out taking landscapes, love it to bits, but it takes time to take it off and open so when working I use a crumpler because its so easy to access the gear in it, pull the flap up and I have me camera in hand and they are as tough as old boots

I think I know what yellowmunky means is that most Camera bags look obviously like camera bags no manufacturer apart from crumpler wants to departs from the tried and tested design formula.

It would seem that Tamrac, Lowepro and Billigham have elderly design teams who cant learn new tricks.

There is always the option to buy a bag you like, then fit it out with foam making your own camera bag.

    Another recommendation for Lowepro.
I've always found their products and customer care absolutely first class.

Not quite a 'people' person, are you Wink

    Cheers guys.

Whilst I want to 'protect my equipment, I happen to be in the city a lot, and am after a bag that doesn't shout STEAL ME!.. I also don't want to look like a rambler(rucksack) or a teenager(crumpler)

I highly rate Lowepro products, and will also be getting a Slingshot 200 for when I'm not in the city, but until then, the search continues for another week.

    many thanks guys Smile

Domke - understated, but does the job.

    Hi Michael

If you want to go truely understated then maybe a Netto's carrier bag is the solution Wink

But alternatively you could put some padded inserts into a suitably sized highstreet bag you can get separate inserts from Billingham Bags or there is a pricey old fashioned looking hiking bag on their site too may be understated enough.

I can recommend the Lowepro slingshot AW200, along with everyone else, for ease of use and capacity, it's not perfect but it's as close as they come. I was using a Billingham press top before that and it was a pain in the b**t to get the camera out of the bag, but it is also very tough and protective, I guess you can't have everything.

I've also been using a lowepro Topload zoom 2 which you can get a chest harness for, it's not pretty but you can keep your kit in front of you at all times and it's cleverly put together so you can fit a good deal of gear in it.

    Pete.
