During the Gulf War, crews used to put a condom over the muzzle of their artillery pieces. It stopped sand getting into the barrel and didn't have to be removed before firing.

I don't really want to protect my lens fungus. I prefer to get rid of it or even better, not get it in the first place.

If that is a Lens Hood, then I guess Little Red Riding Hood must be a small Russian contraceptive.
