Hi all,
Just found this thread after searching for insurances - as, like Suzanne, I'm turning pro this year as well.
I know all about the ins and outs of marketing etc having already run a small business for a number of years and yes, it'll not all be about just taking photos I'm afraid :-( Running a business is even more about promotion, paperwork etc etc but that can be fun as well - especially when you are doing it all for yourself and not to line someone elses pocket! And yes, most work comes through recommendation after a while. Do a good job and your name soon gets passed around!
If the going gets tough, Suzanne, just ask yourself, what would you rather be doing for a living, something you enjoy or not?...
Terry
PS Checked out your website - the front page at least. It wouldn't let me look at the rest though because of not having something enabled. If I can't see the full site, how many other people including potential cusomers can't see it either?
When designing my site, I checked out loads of others and in the end decided that simple and easy to navigate are the most important things.
Good luck!

hello suzanne,
I see that you are not located very far from where i live. i have see you pictures and i like them very much.
I have been trying to renew my portfolio during the last year (my current one gathers mainly shots i made in Paris) and i a gathering a few contact here in Scotland.
Might you be interested, i have put online a new website recently for scottish creative people in Scotland. It is called Fashionbug and, hopefully it will takeoff very soon and offer a bit of fashion taste for those of us who live north from the border and far from the usual fashion places in the UK.
Anyway, i really like your images.

Hi Suzanne
As heidi mentioned in an earlier reply it is well worth getting in touch with your local enterprise agency who may be able to offer you some kind of grant.
i have recently attended a course of seminars with a view to starting up on my own whilst still in f-t employment.
I've learnt a lot from this and once i have completed my business plan i am then able to draw up to 3,500 to help me set up.OK we all know photographic gear isn't cheap and the money won't go too far but this type of grant is out there so make sure you get everything you can and take all advice and i wish you all the best.
