Quote: I want a camera that is small like my S100 so the g1x and x100 is definately a no no !
This is where you need to be honest with yourself, why does the camera have to be the size of the S100 ?
If the camera is a little bigger and its going in a coat or jacket pocket, will it matter if its a little bigger.
Why not get a Nikon J1? Or even a Nikon V1 which has a nice EVF (which the RX100 doesn't have). They've got the same sensor size as the RX100 and probably the same image quality but they have the advantage of interchangeable lenses.
Steppenwolf as i have said in an earlier message i want a COMPACT (which i can take anywhere and even put in my trouser pocket) camera not interchangable lens. Anyway i have looked at the Nikon J/V1 and i didnt like it.....rubbish i would actually say. Im not bothered about interchangable lenses as i have a DSLR and many lenses.

So stick with the s100 or get a mobile ![]()
It it has to be another small camera, for me it would be the sigma over the Sony ![]()
Well the Canon is $200+ cheaper. I’d expect a better camera for that much more money. It does have a few cons though as mentioned in http://www.squidoo.com/sony-rx100 but they're not exactly a dealbreaker for me

Quote: Im considering buying the new RX100 from Sony, i currently use the Canon S100 as my small go anywhere camera but im not too happy with the image quality. I would easily sacrifice the GPS for the extra 8MP so if anybody has one would you recommend it?
Nick
from a posting i made yesterday to another thread. hope its useful.
I bought the Sony RX100 last Saturday after a long deliberation about what and why I shoot. I also shoot with a Fuji x100, but wanted something a bit more versatile, something innocuous when out and about on the streets, but something that shoots excellent quality pictures. Trust me the RX100 does not disappoint on the picture quality stakes. I've compared shots with ones taken with my Canon 7d with 15-85 lens. Even pixel peeping, I would be very hard pressed to decide which one was better.
Yes I wrestled with the lack of viewfinder and hotshot but realised that if I didn't necessarily miss a viewfinder for composing. I actually sound street shots easier when not raising the camera to the eye, as this sort of gave the game away to the potential subjects.
The lens dial is excellent. no it don't click but nor does it feel detached from the settings you are navigating through. The rear screen is absolutely crystal clear and a joy to use even in bright sunlight.
Shooting at arms length? just use a faster shutter speed. noise control is superb so there shouldn't be a problem.
I played with the camera in-shop (great western cameras in Swindon. Cheers lads), went back home, thought about it, read more reviews of alternatives and of the rx100, then went back later and bought it.
It is small, but I have no problem gripping it. The manual focus is a joy to use and puts my x100 not so much into the shade, but into complete darkness.
So after a few days, I am ever so pleased I went for it. Great IQ, and is perfect for sticking into a trouser pocket. No shutter lag either, which was another big big plus for me. AF is lightning quick. Much faster than my x100
Yes it costs a lot, but I would certainly recommend it to anyone thinking about it. I have had the Canon s90 and lleica dlux5 and would say it is far and away much better in IQ, shutter lag, noise control, AF speed, MF usability.
Like any camera, I suppose one needs to just list those things that are important to you as a user and see if any camera ticks the boxes.
Only downisde is that Lightroom needs a software upgrade to handle the RAW files. But the jpegs are lovely strait out. Nice and sharp. The build quality is excellent and reminds me of my Leica dlux5.
I considered the m43 units, but I just didn't deem them pocketable. The Sony sensor in the rx100 is a good size which was another bonus for me.
Anyway, sorry of rthe lengthy tome, but thought it might be useful to hear from an rx100 user.
