If so, what is your opinion of it? How does it perform and what is the fuel economy like?

    Cheers

That's what I was hoping you would say Keith. To which model are you referring, the newest one or previous (or all)?

Cheers Keith. It would probably be the older model I end up with.

If going new go for the 2.0 TDi (pref with DSG gearbox).

Goes evener stinkier and the gearbox smoothes out the slightly lumpy power delivery (it's like an auto, but not quite)!

Have got it in an A3 sportback Wink

    Edit: reply too slow ;-(

Is that DSG box the Audi CVT that actually works? I believe it gives the same or better economy than the manual.

Excellent package - loads of torque and silky-smooth power delivery. Check out our road test.

Thanks David. I've taken your web name and link off though, if you would like to advertise on here there is a link on the menu at the left.

Ian, The DSG box is two 3 speed boxes (1-3-5 & 2-4-6) with two clutches. The box engages the gear you want and pre-selects the other gear it thinks you want. Gear changes are then just a switch of the clutches. Very quick & smooth if the e-brain has got it right, a slight lag if its wrong.

I cant comment on the economy because mines bolted to a 3.2 petrol engine, connected to a sometimes-heavy, right foot.

Oh that one. Can't afford that one. :0)

I was getting confused with the CVT (constant variable transmission) auto they put in the A6. It is the modern development of the old variomatic that was so horrible in the DAF (which became the Volvo 343 I think), which uses 2 cones and a set of bands for an infinite range of gearings. The Audi version is supposed to work really well, rev like a standard box and give good economy.

    Ian,

How much cash do you have - I know you will laugh but I have a new Skoda Octavia 2.0 tdi, same platform as the Audi TT, same engine as the Audi/VW/Seat, 53mpg (on a bad day 55 more usually) and much cheaper to buy. Who knows you might get a new one for the price of a second hand Audi !!

I won't laugh Bob, as I respect the strides Skoda have made in the past 10 years. However, Skoda don't do the quattro system as far as I know.

I think they do or did a 4x4 Octavia based upon the VW/Audi system.
