I'm thinking of getting a small tripod for city trips etc. - one I can either put in my Slingshot 200 bag or in my pocket.

My Manfrotto 190DB is great for landscape photography, but carrying it with me all the time on city trips might not be the wisest thing for me - it's not very handy, and I have to limit weight since I have a very bad back.

Since I expect that I might need sturdy support for my 20D sometimes, even on city trips, but need to limit weight and size, I'm thinking of getting something like a table tripod or some similar solution.

So I was wondering if anyone had used a Manfrotto 345, a Manfrotto 709B, an Ultrapod II, a Gorillapod for SLR with zoom, or a similar support.

    - Would they offer sturdy support for, say, a 20D with 10-20 lens?

    - Would they fit in a coat pocket or in a smaller bag like the Slingshot 200?

My son has a gorrilla pod (the big one) and it takes his D80 (with battery pack) and mid range zoom with a problem.

I use a table top Velbon tripod

I've used a Velbon Ultramaxi tripod with a 20D, and although its not a tabletop tripod, it is small by 'normal' tripod standards, and light and portable. Might be worth a look?

Can you fit something like that in a coat pocket, do you think?

I've got one of these too as well as a Manfrotto 190. The 'SF' model - it weighs about 750 grammes I think and is perfect for hiking in the mountains so might do the trick for what you want. Not quite pocket size though.

I use it with an EOS 3 with primes and a 70-200 f/4

The Ultramaxi IF (there are different versions) is approx 14 inches in length, including the head, when folded, so probably too big for a coat pocket, but would fit, for example, in a rucksack.

The gorillapod is fairly pocketable Conrad. And it weighs next to nothing. And while it doesn't fit inside the slingshot, you can slide one leg through the rubber attachments on the outside. It's a surprisingly solid beast, and you can stick it to all sorts.

Now there's an idea, I've never been able to find a good use for those things.

Got a slr zoom gorillia pod recently, found it outstanding for urban environment. No problems when using on tables etc. I added a ball head which saves load of time. Very light, very happy with it.

I've got three small tripods - Manfrotto 785B, Gorillapod SLR, and well.. this one isn't a tripod but, "the pod" camera platform beanbag.

The 785B is good for travelling, it's very light although may not be small enough for what you want (since you mentioned fitting it into a pocket!). Out of the three, I'd probably pick the gorillapod due to size and ease of use.

Good reactions so far, but I would still like to hear from some Manfrotto 345, Manfrotto 709B and Ultrapod II users. Are there any out there?

If its any help I've got a Slik Mini-pro III which has a centre column with a suction cap at its base for added stability. I find it quite OK for a 300D with battery pack and 90mm macro lens, and it weighs next to nothing and comes with its own carrying bag and ball & socket head - Keith
