Elements has layers and from memory it has close to the same functionality as V7 photoshop. You win and loose. You get better RAW tools etc. I think you loose masks.

Why not go to the Adobe web site and download the document that compares CS to Elements.

Elements 5 is a very good package and can be obtained at a very reasonable price.
As for masks.....there are work arounds.

You can also try PaintShop Pro. Before you spend any money download the 30 day trials of PSE and PSP and see which suits you best.

Elements 5 will not disappoint you. Unless you find you use all of the features in PS7 then it will do every thing you need for £60 or less. It now has curves (called colour curves) albeit a little clunky to use as it is set up for novices.

Paint Shop Pro, even back when version 7 was the latest and Elements was just a twinkle in Mr. Adobe's eye, had the curves tool which Elements has just got Smile

Not wishing to knock Elements but the only comparision is price. PSP is a complicated programme like anything worth having but easier to use.

Of course, as most members know I'm a BIG (in both senses of the word) fan of Paint Shop Pro.

Providing you have a decent speed broadband connection you can download a trial version from the Corel Website

You'll need to set up an account - but let's face it, what sites allow you to download these days without at least giving an email address.

Of course depending on what you want the software to do you might actually find some open source (i.e. free) software perfectly suited to your needs.

Of course PSP is better but can't remember seeing a review which agrees.

    Each to thier own.

My girlfriend recently bought a new laptop that had a trial version of Paint Shop Pro X (I think thats what its called)

A really nice piece of software.... you can buy it for 45 quid at PC World and it has way more functionality that Elements (ie split channel curves for one.) Also the built in effects filters are pretty good too, like the black and white conversions, IR effects etc..... you can take as much control over the image editing as you like, or simply let the software do the hard work.

PhotoShop is good if you need 16bit. If you don;t, I'd go with PSP over Elements.... deffinitely.

you could try the gimp, thats free

If you can wait 6 months Adobe plans to release an online version of Photoshop. It will be free but is likely to be funded by advertising. More info

Paint.NET 3.01 is a reasonable FREE replacement for Photoshop. Has all the main functions that PS has.

Of course PSP is free - just because Photoshop is the industry standard doesn't make it better. Look at Microsoft software! :o)
