I was thinking for my next 'venture' to try some astronomy. Iv always liked stars and things Id like to try taking them. Is this possible with a good telephoto or would a telescope be better with the camera behind?

I noticed telescopes seem to have a different focal spec. Like lenses are 10-20mm for example, they dont list them that way.

I use a 150mm F5 scope it's an Orion Europa model, it has a focal length of 750mm, lower F numbers are better for deep space, higher F numbers are better for planets.

I do attach my scope to my 300D with the use of a T adapter, which I can also put in an eyepiece, or use it without. A good motorised telescope such as a Meade Lx90 or Lx200 would be good for long exposures as it can track the objects along the sky for you.

I get better results with the scope and camera than I do with the camera and my 50 - 500mm lens at 500mm

Edit Basically the set up I have, scope without any motor drive is good for shots of the Moon and looking around the sky, but to take shots of anything else such at Saturn, Jupiter or Deep sky objects you will need a motorised telescope and a good clear dark sky.

Excuse my asking but how much are we talking for a scop like that?

Mine cost about £400 a while ago, I have been looking at getting an LX90 myself and they tend to be around £1000 used, depending on what's included.
Just don't bother with cheap scopes you get from dept stores and toy shops, such as Tasco, waste of money.

I will send you a few links if you like.

I've got a Celestron Ultima 2000 (8 inch SCT) and an old Celestron C8. Both of them are somewhat neglected an the optics aren't perfect, but they could still blow the socks off any 35mm lens. Both easy to bolt DSLR's on. Both of them have tracking.

Thinking of sticking them on ebay but if anyone's interested let me know.
