    Chums,

Doing the PP on some images for a job which was a jazz/folk band concert. Lighting was bright & harsh and there was a really crappy/messy backdrop to the stage.

I've replaced the backdrop using a nurtal-ish colour to get the most out of the images. See sample here:
    http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v295/davebeveridge/6706_w_bluebg.jpg

But I feel this would be better with a real image of a subdued & mottled backdrop (as a portrait photographer would use in the studio), or even one of a pleated curtain or similar. I could slot it in in the same way as changing a sky in a landscape.

Anyone know where I can pick up some free images of this kind? Any help gratefully received. Quick job as I need to deliver this evening Smile

    Dave B.

My personal feeling is that the sort of background you are after would look a bit incongruous with this sort of 'action' shot but that's your call of course.

If you want to do this, why not use Photoshop, perhaps employing the 'clouds' filer?

    Cheers, Barrie,

Hmmmm, yup I see what you mean. I'd like to change it with something though as the backdrop to the original shots is a dull fawn/grey painted wall with various marks and a gloss painted double door in the middle (access to backstage presumably) and other clutter.

Just wanted to show the band a couple of examples of what could be done if they wished to get rid of all that.

I obviously don't want anything that looks out of place or false but you are right. may be worth playing around with some of the more subtle effects on a plain colour ....

    Cheers, Dave B.

    Dave,

You have obviously done a good job 'selecting' the part of the image that is the 'subject' so why not just inverse the selection then apply blur and/or any other manipulation, particularly lighting effects. This will make your subject stand out equally well, but retain the 'live gig' feel.

    Best of luck anyway.

    Hi Dave

Bearing in mind I haven't spent a lot of time on it, is this the sort of thing you had in mind (here)

The difficulty you will have (especially if time is against you) is defining the hair when you cut out the background. It rarely looks good unless you spend a lot of time on it.

    Good luck Smile

    Hi Dabber,

I'm currently having a play with various patterns & effect like blur etc TVM ... see what comes out of it

Barrie, Yup that was the kind of thing .... but very subtle (and probably fairly dark). I've found an application called 'Backdrop Desiogner' puports to do this kinda thing from a library of samples so I'm checking that out

...... I'll let you know how I get on, cheers, Dave B.

You can do it simply enough using Photoshop filters. Just create a background of the 'base' colour you want then go to FILTERS-->RENDER-->CLOUDS

    Best of luck Smile

    Cheers again Barry.

Had a 30sec play with 'Backdrop Designer' and it looks fairly promising. 3 very quick examples:
