Please can somebody help me before i go mad.
Im having trouble with my raw files. When i edit my raw files in photoshop camera raw i get the perfect image that i want, sharp with great saturation and contrast but when i click open image i get a very grainy soft image that looks terrible. ive tried matching up the colour profiles but nothing seems to make it better.
can somebody explain to me what im doing wrong in simple terms as i am a little simple.

    cheers

p.s. i have not yet got a monitor calibrator but am waiting to buy one to see if this will sort my problem. any advice on which calibrator to get would be grateful too.

On the detail tab, are you actually applying any noise reduction or sharpening ?

This is what I typically seem to have:

i am applying sharpening but im sure it shouldn't create the horrible effect it does, does it?

Is the image being resized or the colour depth changed by CR, have a look at the bottom of the CR screen, you should see size, colour depth, DPI indicated

There is also the option to only apply sharpening in preview in CR

Once you have adjusted your image , in raw , use the "save as" option , not "open image" or done.

Best save as a tiff so you can **** about in p.s later.

Thats amazing Eviscera. I think that's sorted it.
Thanks to everyone for your help.

I agree, you are a wasted talent. Really impressive portfolio too. If i could just understand all the colour profile things to do with photography my images might look better

should be setup in Edit>preferences>External Editor

I don't know, but you shouldn't need to use 'Save As', does the bottom of the CR screen look correct (size etc)

    This is from my 50D

I am not sure, but check the preferences in photoshop, because when in cs raw one clicks on OPEN
one should then be in photoshop with an identical image to the processed raw. Which can be saved in any
format (savedas) photogenick seemed to be ending up with an unprocessed image?
