Afraid that's urban legend, he was already wearing red before Coca-Cola started using him (in the 30s).
Not really, our modern day smiley image of Santa with white beard and red coat comes from Sundblom's images for Coca-Cola.
Santa Claus was usually shown wearing green rather than red before Coca-Cola decided to intervene!
This is an 1822 poem, The Night before Christmas - by Clement C. Moore:
"Dressed all in fur from head to foot" does not suggest a red garment.
