I'm working on a project where I need to use flash, and I'd been thinking of buying a studio lighting kit anyway. The problem is that it's a very large space with no mains power anywhere nearby. So I'd like to be able to hire a battery pack. from my research so far it seems that the suppliers of lower cost kits don't provide a battery pack option. Without getting into specifics of lighting set up, does anyone have an opinion on the best value 2 light kit that will allow me to buy/hire a battery pack?
You may be able to get a portable battery pack from some dealers for hire try the Flash Centre or there is an Interfit flash system that comes with a battery not cheap but its a lot cheaper than some and you get only one light. Have a look at Warehouse Express under flash systems and you'll see it. Would post links but I can never work how to do it. Some kind sole will do the link for you.
I've looked at this and the battery packs are pricey if you go for the big names - e.g. around £2000 for elinchrom battery and head.
there are other options out there on EBAY - but I can't really comment on them as I've never used them
here's a quantum - no idea if they are any good, could be utter rubbuish
hi Ade - How are those generators with things like power surges etc.
Can you just use a surge protector on them and they're pretty safe?
Just I remember a thread mentioning gennies and someone saying you'd to be careful not to blow up your lights etc.
Sounds a good investment if they're safe!
.....can someone take Rog to the pub please !!!! ![]()
Cool - does sound like a top bit of kit, longer lasting than a battery back, cheaper too, and you can boil a kettle off it for a brew too I guess?

stellar-xtremes start at about £260 including a battery pack.
Thanks for the comments all, taken on board but I'm still very usure. I'll add a bit of detail about the situation.
The set up will be getting individuals or small groups to pose in an indoor theatre/ballroom with almost no little ambient light and no power, because the building is closed. I want to light the sitters and also throw enough light around the room so that it's not a completely black background. I'm not sure abouth the Interfit light that was linked as it doesn't have any sofboxes etc. What I'm really looking for is a 2/3 light starter kit with softboxes, brolly etc. I'm indoors with this project so although the Honda generator looks good it may not be appropriate.
Also I'm still not quite sure that I should hire at all as the project will run intermittently for a few months so, while the initial cost of buying will be high, hire will soon add up. Then there's additional cost of travel to collect and drop off the kit to consider. As it's a personal project costs need to be kept down but taking a longer view, I want to get some lighting as it will be useful in future. I could find the cash for decent kit (my wife actually backs theidea but I'm sure there will be a payback!)
I'm also paying close attention to Ade's Off Camera Flash Photography thread.
I agree Martin. I hate using speedlights as I find that getting the quality of light that I like to be too fussy a procedure. Being able to use one of my strobes outside with the accessories I have would be brilliant. That Honda genny looks good especially with the low noise.
