I had a problem about eight years ago when a thunderstorm took out my computer and modem, the computer died along with the hard drive. Back in them days I didn't used to back up images so I lost everything digital I had shot. I now make sure I always unplug the modem and all mains power going to the computer during a thunderstorm, including external hard drives and the monitor.
A few years ago a lightning strike took out my motherboard ( or so the repair guy told me ). I was lucky, I lost nothing else and the motherboard was quickly replaced. I'm always wary of thunder and lightening storms and now always shut down and unplug. As a child , thunderstorms were always a source of great anxiety, largely due to my mums fear of them. When a child she watched her best friend as she was hit by a lightening strike. They had sheltered under a tree , mum was lucky , her best friend less so. She told me how two men passing just after the strike, wrapped her friend in One of their coats and carried her a mile to the nearest house, before they could raise the alarm. Mum can still vividly recall the smell , and I'm sure the sight she witnessed is still as fresh in her mind, though she has never told me just what that was like. Her friend did not survive, and the fear of the power of lightening, has stayed with my mum to this day , and she is now 82.
