Right, finally got me a computer at home (cheap refurb), and need to get connected to the 'net. Then I can start uploading photos and stop risking my job by using epz during the day.
Want to get broadband, but find it all a bit of mindfield. I just want an inexpensive, reliable provider for basic home use.
Who do you guys use? Who's good & who isn't?
Bulldog? Wanadoo? BT?
Any help & suggestions much appreciated.

I can only speak from experience with BT Broadband. I have 2 lines at home both ADSL enabled. I use BT Business Broadband on one for work and BT Openworld Broadband on the other for play. I've had no problems with either of these.
I can very highly recommend Plusnet as your ISP with BT to supply the DSL line. The service you get from Plusnet is hard to beat and they have a range of deals to suit whatever you want, from buying your own DSL modem/router and installing yourself through to having everything done for you.
In addition you get 250mb of web space and they will host your domain for you (if you have one) free of charge.
If you have any specific questions about them just ask.
I'll second Ian's comments for Plusnet. Reliable service and customer care is great.
I am into my third year with Pipex now and have nothing but praise for the service, unlimited 256/512 connection for 22/month.
Relaible, Fast, Cool.
I'll third Ian's recommendation for PlusNet. fast, and good service. Easy to see status of any service calls you make.
I'll go with BOB S on this one. I too use Pipex and have nothing but praise for their exemplary service.
BT is the best one for customer service and backup should you have any problems
"BT is the best one for customer service and backup should you have any problems"
You've tried them all, I take it! Whilst BT are not bad, if you compare them with a couple already mentioned here, plus my server, f2s, BT trails in a lonely last in every category, including customer service.
Have a look here,
I use Pipex too and I'm online all day everyday...no probs at all
When I had a problem with my DSL line I contacted BT and they didn't have a clue. I contacted Plusnet by phone, they diagnosed it straight away, contacted BT to tell them what they needed to do and I was back on within a couple of hours. When I logged on to my account the call history was totally up to date and I could see exactly what had happened from the moment I placed the call.
One of the things I really like about Plusnet is the amount of information you have at your fingertips, such as service status, detailed notes of maintenance work they are doing and its' progress, reports you have placed and even alerts they are about to take the subscription out of your bank. They are the only company I have ever used, in any sector, which does so much to keep the customer informed.
I think all the companies mentioned are very good, I know I have been absolutely delighted with the performance of f2s. Most people say Who? which suits me fine, keep it small and manageable. Has all the stuff Ian has mentioned, cheap telephone calls all over the world (Spain, about 4p a minute, instead of BT's 30p plus a minute!) plus an excellent help forum that works very well. If you sign up, mention my name, gets me 10 every time!
Thanks all for your feedback. I was recommended Zen but no-one's mentioned them.
Based on your feedback and comparing prices, I think I'll give Plus.net a call. I have to make a decision, or it'll take me as long to get an ISP as it did to buy a pc!
This is an interesting thread.Broadband is coming to my area in January 05.I have been a member of AOL for some 6 years and been happy with the dialup service. Can I transfer to their Gold Broadband service with confidence.I would be grateful for info on this.Thanks.
