I see what you mean John. I hadn't thought of the card reader being the cause of the problem.

For what it is worth, my CF cards are inserted into a dedicated Lexar CF reader and nothing else.
If I recall, it cost quite a few bob, about four years ago, but fingers X'd, never had a single issue with itSmile
Never trusted those multi readersSad

I've got one of those very multi-readers!
It's a Kingston one that I was given for Christmas as I'd previously only used SD cards and readers or the CF slot in the front of my printer.
Then the one in the printer went peculiar. Now whenever I try to use it, as soon as I insert the card, the printer turns itself off, so I've given up on that idea.
I suppose as long as the card works from the word go, there shouldn't be a problem.

I'm glad to say that I had the camera repaired for 50 including return postage by this guy on eBay;

The 350D has been working as new for a month now so I would recommend him.

The turnaround was very quick and another 1.99 got me a USB cable which I use with Kubuntu (Linux) on my computer. Downloads are quick (USB 2.0).

The 4gig card is NEVER leaving my camera again!!!

Thanks for the advice, everyone. HAPPY SNAPPING!!

Mark.
