Anyone know of any camera clubs that would welcome a novice with a D-SLR? I live near Andover, but Amesbury & Salisbury are an easy trip for me.

    Thanks

    Rich

    Have you tried Google?

Yes, but was hoping for personal recommendations...

I had a brief look at Google for you and found nothing (doesn't mean to say there isn't anything). However EPZ is as good as any camera club - very active.

To answer your first question, I would be very surprised if any camera club didn't welcome novices with or without a dSLR.

Sorry John but I have to disagree.

It is *better* than any camera club.
Most clubs meet once a week, but you can come here as often as you like!

I think if I took anyhthing as modern as a digital camera to my camera club, I'd have to take smelling salts too.... to administer to members fainting everywhere.

Showing anything which isn't a slide at least 40 years old is a no-no!! Grin

Years ago I was a member of Andover Split Image Photographic Society. They're one of the friendliest clubs I've ever been to.

They used to meet at the pub mentioned in the address below every Thursday night [except for the "closed" season]

I got the info from here

    Further info here

I remember John very well - and also Mike Hansen. Give them my regards if you speak to them.

I live in Andover and last time i looked their website was out of date so wasn't sure if they were still running but looking at the link it seems more up to date.

Another place to look is Marwell zoo that have a camera club I have been a member but due to work i have never made it to a meet and always forget to renew my subscription.

Not sure how camera clubs are up to date with digital as they mainly seemed to be aimed at slide and print. I guess I'm looking for a club where you can enter competitions by handing in a disk as it's quick and easy as i don't want to spend time mounting prints or trying to get the print to print what i see on the screen. Looking at their programme there is very little on digital and all aimed at print slide

If anyone knows of any clubs that encourage digital as well as print and slide on an equal basis then i would be interested

    Phil

I live in dorset, I think every club teaches digital, for instance check out bfcc.info

Thank you all for your replies, I shall look into ASIPS.

    Couple of things:

Went on the Photographic Alliance of Great Britain site. A lot of decent camera clubs are members and they list them by region. There appears to be one in Andover and some alternatives not too far away ... see here http://www.pagb-photography-uk.co.uk/

I live in Colchester and am a member of two clubs, one in Colchester and the other being Ipswich. Both are in some ways different but they both (and other clubs that I know of) share many things in common. Specifically they welcome new members, images created thro digital medium reigns supreme in print and increasing "projected" competitions and the advent of digital has lead to an increase in both membership and club activity.

From a personal standpoint, my membership of these clubs (Colchester 4 years and Ipswich 2 years) has played a major part in my increased photographic skill and interest. In short, I would recommend anyone to join a club .... The ways of old "fuddy duddy's" are, I believe, on the decline. Indeed Colchester has this year attracted three new female members who have added their own creative talent to the proceedings and the overal standard of the club has truly been raised as a consequence of this "competition".

In short, I do not share the negative comments made ealier in response to your question and whilst Ephotozine provides and excellent service it cannot be compared to the membership of a good camera club and the personal interaction that takes place there.

    Hope this helps

    Regards
    Roy

Thank you Roy, I appreciate the advice

    Rich

I would echo those comments by Roy.

The average age of my camera club has dropped drastically in the past 2 years as a result of the new influx of youth and talent.

    Long may it continue
